Welcome to Hawkesbury

When fire destroyed the Hawkesbury Curling Club on January 15, 1965, the Directors of the Curling Club recognized the opportunity to examine the possibility of forming a combined golf and curling center. The Abenaki Golf & Country Club was enthused about this idea and five representatives were appointed from each organization, forming a provisional committee to proceed with such plans.

After several studies, the committee investigated several properties and form this group three properties were selected which seemed the most suitable to be made into a golf and curling club.

In the spring of 1966, the committee invited a golf architect to accompany them on a tour of the three properties. They finally decided that the Lavigne and Montgomery farms were the most suitable for several reasons.

The next step was to obtain a charter which would be suitable for the next organization. After obtaining legal advice, it was agreed that the charter then held by the Hawkesbury Curling Rink Company would be amended. The charter was finally amended having been approved by the Ontario Security Commission and signed by the Ontario Provincial Secretary.

The Committee was then in a position to proceed with definite plans for the golf course, clubhouse, and curling rink. Gordon Miner Ltd., Golf Architect was instructed to proceed with definite plans for the golf course and at the same time John W. Cooke, Architect, was given clearances to proceed with plans for the clubhouse and curling rink.

Work on construction of the golf course began in the spring of 1967. Also work on the construction of the clubhouse and rink began in July 1967.

The official sod turning ceremony was held on August 5th, 1967, with the first nine holes ready in July 1968.

The first official curling event was "Open House" held on the week of December 10th through December 16, 1967.

The official opening of the Hawkesbury Golf & Curling Ltd. was held on August 3rd, 1968 with nine holes of golf played at both the new course and the Abenaki Golf Course.
