The Junior Curlers (from 10 to 19 years of age) at the Hawkesbury Golf and Curling Club benefit from certified coaching to learn and improve their basic skills, and to understand the strategy and importance of etiquette and good sportsmanship of the game. The game itself offers a great physical workout and learning to work together as a team.
The first half of the 2 hour practice focuses on skill development, following the Curl Ontario Skill Awards Program. This is an exciting, simple program where curling skills improve in a variety of areas with each level earned. Each curler starts at their appropriate level (Red, Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold) and works throughout the season, at his or her own pace. Progress is shared with family and friends by taking the booklet home each week and they get an immediate reward in the form of a crest and certificate once the minimum number of points is achieved.
The second hour of the practice is spent playing a short game, where the kids play different positions each week and have the opportunity to apply the skills and strategies they are learning. A strong focus is placed on having fun, communication and teamwork. By February and March, the kids are ready to participate in outside tournaments (bonspiels) at either the competitive or non-competitive levels. These are one-day events, where the kids play 2 or 3 games, and always come away with good memories and a prize. It is a great environment for the kids, and everyone interested in playing is put on a team. Some of our kids have enjoyed the thrill of winning at the Richmond and the Winchester bonspiels.
Encourage your kids to come out and try curling. The winter will fly by when they’re having fun!
